New Gym – New Opportunities

By SteveO | December 13, 2011

At work, they changed the heath care benefit provider.  As a part of this change we now had access to a program/service called Global Fit.  Global Fit is sort of like a clearing house for gyms and nutrition.  Not only do they provide information, but they also provide access to discounted memberships and goods.  And lucky for me, a gym that is on my normal route home from work is a part of their discount network.  So, I dropped my membership at Planet Fitness, and got a membership at Island Fitness.  Tonight I finally had my orientation/first workout with a trainer.  He walked me through the 8 machines that he suggests I use and had me do 1 set one each machine.  He then had me end the session with some time on a treadmill.  I had a pressing appointment that I had forgotten about when I setup the time with him, so I did not finish out the additional sets that he recommended.  But I will when I go back.

So, what are my goals for my time at this gym?  Well, since it is convenient to where I work, I hope to go 3 times a week.  I also hope to lose 10 pounds a month, or 110 to 120 pounds by this time next year.  Of course the real goal is to go from the 48-50 pant waist to 32 or less, and from 3XL-4XL shirts down to Large or Medium.  I am not looking to “bulk up”, but to trim down.  Who knows what kind of definition I might find under there.  Basically, I want to like the person who looks back at me by the time my 50th birthday arrives in June of 2013.

So, fingers crossed, here’s hoping this time is the real time.

Another “Fly By Night” Fitness Guru Gone?

By SteveO | March 5, 2011

Well, I guess it should be no surprise that after finding an old complaint email that I sent to Jon Benson Fitness regarding his failure to live up to a promise he made publicly, to over 600 people no less, he seems to have dropped off the face of the planet.  His websites are still up, so either he had a long paid for contract, or his credit cards have not been revoked yet.  A little more digging seems to show that his last updates to his websites were around September of 2010, just a few short months after the BBB revoked his accreditation.  So how does he takes this “set back”?  Well, if you believe his YouTube channel, he got engaged, and vacationed in Hawaii.  I guess he just doesn’t have a care in the world anymore.  All the promises that he made and broke are just dust in the wind to him.

To anybody that might have gotten scammed by him and his “inspirational story”, man I really feel for you.  To anybody that bought his “stuff” and it actually worked for you, great!  Maybe you can now become a fitness guru and make enough money to vacation in Hawaii as well.  If you happen to bump in to Jon, kick some sand in his face for me.

Other sites still carry his bio, and advertise his books, so I guess the fitness community still loves him.  I don’t know why, it just brings down their credibility.

It begins yet again

We are into the new year, and it is yet again time for me to make an attempt at achieving my goals for getting thinner.  To this end, I stumbled across an interesting plugin for WordPress, Bucketlister.  I am using it on this site to document my goals (yes, that would be the new “Goals” tab up top).

I have also joined Planet Fitness in Rockledge, and have my trainer orientation on Monday (January 17th).  My goal in the beginning is to go at least twice a week, days yet to be determined.

Hopefully, this will be the year that things really do change for me.  After all, it is often said that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result”.  To that end, sitting on my couch (chair) hasn’t been getting me thinner, so maybe going to the gym will.

This seems counter productive

So, I watched most of the Biggest Loser “Where Are They Now” Thanksgiving Special.  And as I watched it, there was something that one of the guys said that seemed a bit odd to me.  He said that if it had not been for his time on the Biggest Loser, he would probably still be sitting in front of the TV.  I can certainly identify with that.  After all, that is where I find myself most of the time (when I’m not at work or asleep).  But I have to wonder, The Biggest Loser show is on for a couple of hours.  How does that help to get people away from their recliner and onto a path for a healthier fitter life? When all else fails……

By SteveO | August 8, 2010

…..bitch and moan, I suppose.  Yeah, it’s been a long while since I posted anything here.  And in the meantime I have struggled, failed, tried again, and continued to fail.  I try to get help, and the people that I approach over promise and under deliver.  Others just plain old ignore my pleas for help.  I guess it just goes to show that if you don’t have a “heart touching story”, people just don’t care….even though they say that the obesity problem in America hurts them down to their soul.

At this point, I just don’t know what to do.  I have tried reaching out to the celebs, the gurus, and the web.

The celebs only want you to join their website program at a ridiculously high monthly rate.  I mean really.  Don’t they make enough money with their tv series, video games, and licensing?

And then there are the non-celeb gurus.  They want you to join their website, buy their book, and buy the tools from their buddies.  Oh yeah, and subscribe to their email lists where they give you just a hint of information that they then explain in their book, which of course they are happy to sell you.

So that leaves the web.  You would think that you could find a fantastic community of people that are struggling with the same issues as you.  I mean that is what everyone keeps on saying about the web, it is like a huge global support group.  But what I have found is that everybody is just like you, and they really don’t offer any help because they haven’t found the answers either.

So where does that leave us/me?  Lost.  Alone.  Fat, and getting fatter, or should I say “fluffier“.
